Frequently asked questions about cask management

What is cask re-racking?

Cask re-racking is an essential part of a successful cask maturation programme. It is also important if a cask is damaged or in "dead" wood that isn't improving the whisky. We have an extensive range of different casks and spirit finishes that casks can be re-racked into. For example, moving the whisky from a bourbon cask to a sherry cask for a period of time.

How is my cask stored?

Palletised Storage: The ultimate cost-effective solution for young casks. By storing the casks vertically on pallets, this method slows down maturation and minimises evaporation ("The Angels' Share"). It is ideal for long-term inventory that doesn't require regular sampling or regauging.

Racked Storage: This is the industry standard for flexibility and accessibility. Casks of all sizes are stored horizontally on secure steel racks, allowing machinery to easily access individual rows. This is the perfect choice for maturing stock that requires frequent sampling, regauging, or re-racking.

Dunnage Storage: The gold standard of traditional craftsmanship. This is the classic, earthen floor, warehouse style featured on our Bond tours. This hands-on method is typically reserved for premium, high-value casks that require easy access.

What is cask regauging

Regauging is the process of accurately measuring current volume and alcohol content ($ABV$). This vital process ensures rigorous quality control and delivers the data needed to forecast maturation, as well as to identify any issues with the cask.
